The merchant families of Limerick, local government and port officials came together to build the Sailor’s Home in 1856. A stone’s throw from the Shannon Estuary and the Atlantic Ocean. A noble and practical idea. To provide welcome to seafarers and explorers coming through the port. Benefiting the port, city and sailors.

Sailor’s Home is about the welcome, character, place, people and stories of Limerick. It’s about the West coast of Ireland and our unique relationship with the sea. It’s about all those with the need to explore.
We believe in the power of exploration, that we must continue to make it better and that we’re connected in what we do. The Sailor’s Home, founded with noble intentions in 1856, was never used for its original purpose. Due to racism, fears and distrust, its opening was delayed and many potential positive uses for the building were scuppered. The Sailor’s Home Company stands for tolerance, diversity, positive change and respect for others.
