Maker of the Sailor’s Home film “Inside the Barrel – Craft & Reward”.
Here's to Mickey Smith. West Coast surfing pioneer. Musician. Filmmaker. Writer. Explorer.
Mickey will always be associated with the West of Ireland and its coast. For over a decade, he - and a core group of pioneering surfers - discovered, surfed and introduced the world to Ireland's revered big waves.
"This place is really close to my heart," he says. "There's just something about it that's magical."
COMMITMENT TO THE CRAFT, AND PASSION TO PUSH THE BOUNDARIES
As cinematographer and filmmaker, Mickey has worked with some of the finest wave riders and oceanic adventurers in the world. "It’s the most incredible thing. It's only achievable through time spent riding waves, all sorts of waves on all sorts of crafts, more time learning out in the water & remember it with a photograph, or a scar."
WINTER
BY MICKEY SMITH
I DON'T KNOW WHY I NEED TO BE ALONE, THERE AIN'T NO HIDING FROM A DICE TO ROLL.
THERE'S ONLY I TO YEARN FOR THE DAWN, NO PLACE NOR TIME, FOR CHASING SHADOW, CURSING CALM.
AND TO THE STORM, ONLY THE WILD KNOWS ITS OWN.
I MISS MY FAMILY MAN, I MISS MY HOME THE ENDLESS MILES MY ONLY SHELTER, FROM THE COLD.
THE REWARD OF HOME
Why capture what no-one else can or will? Why rise in the dark, endure dousings and drownings, cold to the point of hypothermia, bumps and bruises, dislocations to fractures? “Because of the whisper of possibility. This is an artform unto itself and us.” To do something worth doing, and remember it with a photograph, or a scar. This is where he belongs. In the ocean. With others of like mind.
